Human Trafficking
an illegal act involving the exploitation of a person for profit or material gain. It is often referred to as a modern-day form of slavery as the victim’s fundamental human rights are assaulted.
In Canada, the two most common forms of human trafficking are: sex trafficking and labour trafficking.
Traffickers will take all or most of the money that is earned by providing the sexual services or performing the work.
Traffickers will typically use manipulation, coercion, and threats in order to force the person they are exploiting to provide the sexual services or perform the work.
Many victims do not even realize that what is happening to them is illegal, especially if they initially consented to anything in the beginning. But, under Canadian law, no one is able to consent to their own exploitation.
The Different Forms of Human Trafficking
Sex trafficking and labour trafficking are the main forms of human trafficking that are seen in Canada. In the beginning, a trafficker of either one may act as a companion, provider, or friend and then slowly turn to guilt, shame, blackmail, debt, or threats to get what they want.
